Peace is not made among angels!

Heinz Michael Vilsmeier conducts an interview with Michael von der Schulenburg on the occasion of the publication of the memorandum „NO MORE WARS “ for the 80th anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations.

„For me,“ writes Michael von der Schulenburg in his memorandum on the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, „the UN Charter and its call of ‚Never again war‘ are a very personal matter. I have spent the greater part of my professional life with the United Nations in war or conflict zones around the world and have witnessed much heartbreaking suffering. In the process, I often found myself feeling helpless, even though it should have been my duty to help. That is why I feel so connected to the UN Charter and hope that, through my commitment to the Charter, I can help, if not to prevent, then at least to somewhat reduce in the future the human casualties caused by wars and armed conflicts.“

The present interview can be read as a companion text to Michael von der Schulenburg’s memorandum. — It aims to make a small contribution toward restoring our confidence in the Charter of the United Nations and its principles.

Here is Michael von der Schulenburg’s memorandum on the 80th anniversary of the
UN Charter.

Dear Reader,

Here is my brochure “No More Wars – The Charter of the United Nations” as a PDF. It is available in both English and German on the website www.bsw-ep.eu as an e-book as well. Please feel free to share it.

If you could support and publicize this in any way, I would be very grateful to you.

Here are a few more thoughts on this:

The occasion for this brochure is the 80th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter on October 24 of this year. I consider this milestone to be extremely important, because in light of ongoing wars and the development of ever more devastating weapon systems, the UN Charter—and the international law based on it—has almost completely collapsed today. At the same time, we are witnessing the end of a Western-dominated unipolar world and entering a phase of significant geopolitical change. This raises the crucial question of how we can return to a more peaceful world order. One only needs to follow the current debate in the UN General Assembly to realize the urgency of this question.

The central idea of this brochure is that we must restore our collective trust in the UN Charter and its principles. For this reason, I only briefly address questions of institutional reform of the UN. I am convinced that reforming its institutions will become much easier once the international community once again stands behind the Charter and its principles.

In this brochure, I treat the UN Charter as a political document, which may bother some legal experts, but that is how I have experienced it. The book is strongly influenced by my own experiences in war. For this reason, I am including my complete résumé (which I have never tried to edit on Wikipedia or elsewhere).

For me, the UN Charter and its call for “No More Wars” are a very personal matter. I spent most of my professional life with the United Nations in war or conflict zones around the world and witnessed much heartbreaking suffering. Through this, I often experienced a sense of helplessness, even though it was actually my duty to help. That is why I feel so deeply connected to the UN Charter and hope that, through my commitment to it, I can help to at least somewhat limit—if not fully prevent—human casualties from wars and armed conflicts in the future.

I sincerely hope that this brochure can make a small contribution to restoring our trust in the Charter of the United Nations and its principles—not just on behalf of our governments, but for all of us. After all, the Charter is about “We the Peoples.”

Sincerely, Michael von der Schulenburg
