Simon David Dressler: There’s also a curious phenomenon called “algospeak,” where certain words are replaced with others because influencers believe this helps them get around algorithmic blocks.

This happens in subtitles too. For every video, you can have subtitles generated automatically and then edit them.

And if, for example, you say something with the word sex—anything sexual—it’s become common not to write S-E-X in the subtitles, but S-E-G-G-S, because people believe this will bypass the automatic content detection.

When I make videos about Gaza, for example, I eventually got used to saying “dodgeball” instead of “genocide”—at least in the subtitles. Not because I know it actually works, but because I suspect that the automatic content detection for critical or sensitive topics won’t be triggered, which is probably silly, since these algorithms and AI-powered content detection systems are so advanced that you probably can’t outsmart them this way.

Simon David Dressler: Es gibt auch ein kurioses Phänomen, das heißt „Algospeak“, also „Algorithm-Speak“, wo man gewisse Wörter durch andere Wörter austauscht, weil man von Influencerseite glaubt, dass man dadurch gewisse algorithmische Sperrungen umgeht.

Zum Beispiel auch in Untertiteln. – Man kann bei jedem Video die Untertitel automatisch generieren lassen und die dann anpassen.

Und wenn man zum Beispiel irgendwas mit dem Wort Sex sagt, also sexuelle Irgendwas, dann hat es sich so etabliert, dass man in den Untertiteln nicht S-E-X schreibt, sondern S-E-G-G-S, weil man glaubt, dass man damit quasi die automatische Inhaltserkennung umgeht.

Wenn ich zum Beispiel Videos über Gaza mache, habe ich mir irgendwann angewöhnt, statt Völkermord, Völkerball zu sagen – also in den Untertiteln.

Nicht weil ich weiß, dass es was bringt, sondern weil ich vermute, dass dann die automatischen Inhaltserkennungen für kritische oder sensible Themen nicht anspringen, was wahrscheinlich bescheuert ist, weil das so wahnsinnig fortgeschrittene Algorithmen und KI-gestützte Inhaltserkennungen sind, dass man die damit wahrscheinlich nicht überlisten kann.

This conversation with the Israeli dissident and activist Ronnie Barkan took place in the apartment of a Jewish friend in Munich-Haidhausen —a personal space in which an open exchange about Palestine, Zionism, Judaism, Israel, and the consequences of decades of violence could unfold.

Barkan does not see himself as anti-Israel, but as decidedly anti-Zionist: he regards Zionism as an apartheid ideology that forms the basis for the expulsion of Palestinians. He is not alone in this stance. It connects him with those Orthodox Jewish groups that also reject Zionism for religious and ethical reasons.

Shaped by his own family history — his grandparents survived Auschwitz and Dachau — and by experiences in a village in the West Bank where, as a young man, he met refugees from Tabsur, Barkan views it as a moral obligation to advocate for the restoration of the rights of the Palestinian population.

The interview explores the personal motivations behind his activism and his hope for a future coexistence of Jews and Arabs on the basis of equality and justice.

HMV: … Poor prospects for the future …

Ronnie Barkan: Yes. I mean, I try to look to the future optimistically. And I think there is a real possibility for a better future, but the current situation is the worst it has ever been.

I left Palestine about a decade ago because I felt it was irresponsible to stay there, since I can be much more effective from the outside in changing the situation inside. Unfortunately, the situation is such that it is very difficult to change it from within.

However, many people, including many Palestinians, are abroad. Half of all Palestinians have been living in forced exile for the past seven decades.

And there is obviously a worldwide community that is very supportive of Palestine, in contrast to their governments, in contrast to elected officials. In most countries in the world, governments support Israel, while people actually understand and support those who are oppressed and subjugated.

That is why I became involved in the BDS campaign, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel, similar to the boycott campaign that existed back then against South Africa.

There is a global, Palestinian-led BDS campaign against Israel to fundamentally demand that Israel comply with its obligations under international law and respect the basic human rights conventions, and I was involved in it. This too is based on exerting pressure from the outside in order to change the situation inside.

HMV: Ronnie, when you say that there is a BDS campaign and you are a supporter of the BDS campaign, I assume you would be accused of antisemitism in this country. What would you say to such an accusation?

Ronnie Barkan: First we need to talk about what the BDS campaign is about and what the struggle for Palestinian rights is about. The BDS campaign demands three fundamental rights for Palestinians, all of which are protected by international law and human rights conventions.

So, basically, anyone who demands equality, freedom and justice for those who are currently oppressed in Palestine is, for some reason, regarded as antisemitic by German authorities or Israeli authorities, as you mentioned. In fact, it is exactly the opposite.

Those who call for equality and rights for all are the ones standing up for their human values, while the Zionist racial state, which from the outset is designed as a racial state, is based on the distinction between what it regards as “the superhumans” and “the subhumans.”

And this state has no legitimacy whatsoever. It is exclusively about racial superiority, white superiority.

Et pour cela, vous êtes, pour ainsi dire, mis au pilori comme anti-israéliens, alors que vous êtes en réalité les Israéliens démocrates, et non les orthodoxes qui se réfèrent à des injonctions divines d’appropriation de la terre vieilles de 5 000 ans.

Judith Bernstein: Oui, et je dois aussi dire que je ne peux pas comprendre quand M. Schuster ou Mme Knobloch brandissent à chaque fois l’accusation d’antisémitisme, parce que je pense qu’ils se font du tort. Et, au fond, je ne peux pas le comprendre non plus: ils vivent en Allemagne, y jouissent des libertés, y jouissent de ce que nous avons encore ici, la démocratie. – Et là-bas, cela devrait être combattu – c’est-à-dire le peu de démocratie qui reste encore. Donc, là-bas, les Palestiniens devraient être combattus. Cela ne me convient pas! Je veux dire, je ne peux pas ici profiter de tous les avantages d’une démocratie et les refuser là-bas aux Palestiniens. – Je ne comprends pas non plus les Juifs ici, et en faisant cela ils se nuisent à eux-mêmes!

That is so unbelievable to me, because really you are the ones who represent the democratic tradition, in Israel or as Israelis. And for that you are then, so to speak, put in the pillory as anti-Israeli, even though you are actually the democratic Israelis, and not the Orthodox who refer to 5,000-year-old divine orders of land appropriation.

Judith Bernstein: Yes, and I also have to say, I can’t understand it when Mr. Schuster or Ms. Knobloch come up with the accusation of antisemitism every single time, because I think that harms them. And basically, I can’t understand it either: they live in Germany, enjoy the freedoms here, enjoy what we still have here—democracy. – And over there that is supposed to be fought—meaning the little bit of democracy that is still left. So the Palestinians are supposed to be fought there. That doesn’t work for me! I mean, I can’t enjoy all the advantages of a democracy here and deny that to the Palestinians there. – I don’t understand the Jews here either, and by doing that they harm themselves!!

Jutta Schubert: … Die Auffassungen waren ja auch zwischen den Mitgliedern der Weißen Rose unterschiedlich gelagert. Also Professor Huber hat sich wohl wirklich ein parlamentarisches System, eine Demokratie, wie wir sie heute haben, für die Zukunft vorgestellt.  – Die anderen waren vielfältig gar nicht so weit. Willi Graf aus Saarbrücken hat hauptsächlich aus seinem Glauben heraus, seinem katholischen Glauben, gehandelt und ist der Gruppe beigetreten. Und auch aus Gründen der Kunst. – Er hat im Bach-Chor gesungen, und er hat verbotene Bücher gelesen! Die waren nicht so weit, das System einer parlamentarischen Demokratie im Hinterkopf zu haben – überhaupt gar nicht! Das will die Stiftung alles nicht wissen. Aber es ist ja vielfach so, dass man an Grenzen stößt. Zum Beispiel, ich weiß nicht, ob Du das weißt: Es ist ja so, dass Alexander Schmorell von der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche heiliggesprochen wurde. Das war wirklich ein Hammer. Eine kurze Zeit nach dem Erscheinen meines Buches hat die Russisch-Orthodoxe Kirche im Ausland – so nennt sie sich, also nicht in Russland, sondern im außerrussischen Ausland, die haben überall ihre Stationen, unter anderem eine große Gemeinde in München – diese Münchener Gemeinde hat Alexander Schmorell heiliggesprochen. Er ist der Erste Heilige Alexander von München, diesen Namen hat er. Sein Todestag, der 13. Juli wird als Heiligentag begangen. Es gibt eine Ikone, ich habe eine Postkarte davon. Interessanterweise stand diese Ikonenpostkarte auch bei Lilo Ramdohr und bei Nikolay Hamazaspian auf dem Schrank. Dort habe ich diese Ikone zum ersten Mal gesehen. Die hatten aber auch nur Postkarten davon. Ich habe auch so eine Postkarte, die hängt in meinem Arbeitszimmer.
